What is sugar cane plastic?
Sugar cane is traditionally used to make cane sugar (sucrose) and originates from the tropics and subtropics. Modern technology, combined with the world’s efforts towards sustainable ways of living has transformed sugar cane into plant-based plastic that is suitable for many purposes. The fibrous part of a sugar cane stalk that remains after extraction is usually discarded, incinerated, or used as a fuel source. New advancements have made these stalks into sugar cane polymer bags as a truly renewable resource. Get in touch for more information about our sugar cane polymer bags.
How does sugar cane become plastic?
Sugar cane polymer bags are created using pioneering technology. Here’s how it happens…
- Sugar cane is crushed to release sugar juices – these then become the cane sugar that we are highly familiar with across the world.
- The sugar cane is then refined to release ethanol, a plant-based alcohol, which is used to create a sugar cane-based pellet.
- Using a reactor, the ethanol is transformed into polyethene, a malleable solid that can be moulded to create sugar cane polymer bags.
- It can be manufactured into sugar cane polymer bags, sugar cane plastic bottles, food-safe packaging and other sugar plastic packaging.
What are the benefits of sugar cane plastic packaging?
Growing sugar cane commercially captures many co2 emissions instead of using ethanol from fossil fuel petrochemicals which release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The Carbon Trust recently accredited sugar cane polymer bags as carbon neutral.
Though sugar cane polymer bags aren’t biodegradable, they are 100% recyclable. Once cleaned of food waste or other substances can simply be added to your recycling bin along with your other recyclable items such as cardboard.
In 2021/2022, approximately 181.18 million metric tons of sugar were produced in total worldwide. While 30% yields sugar products, the other two-thirds is often treated as waste. Utilising sugar cane for sugar cane polymer bags is a totally renewable source.
Sugar cane polymer bags, like other plant-based plastic, are certified home compostable and industrially compostable to European Standards (EF T51-800). This means that they can go straight into a compost bin and can be diverted from a landfill.
Plastic packaging components containing 30% or more recycled plastic are not chargeable for tax. However, they still count towards the 10-tonne threshold for packaging you manufacture or import in 12 months, and you must keep records of it.
While sugar cane polymer bags are not a 100% zero impact solution, they are highly preferable to other alternatives such as petroleum-based options and Styrofoam. Which incidentally takes 500 years or more to break down and consumes 30% of landfill space.
